Nia Avery Endorses Tony Burks Atlanta, GA - September 2017
In times when a majority of children are being left behind academically, parents, educators, and politicians seek solutions to even the playing field so that all kids don't just have the right to learn, but actually get the right to learn. As a parent and an educator with a small-based business daycare in Atlanta, GA, it is my priority that those of us who can make a difference in children's education from a pre-k level make it happen!
When I learned about Dr. Burks running for Board of Education, I made it a priority to meet him, shake his hand, and find out who he is and what passion he displays for the education of our children. I must say I was pleasantly impressed with Dr. Burks' willingness to open up about his life. I learned the great ideas he has for the future of Georgia's education and what he's learned from his past work experience that will set our children up to be competitive academically, culturally with the confidence that groom future leaders.
I can say with certainty that my time spent with Dr. Burks impressed me enough to not only head out to the polls on his behalf, but to encourage others to do the same. Dr. Tony Burks, he's the right choice for Atlanta's Board of Education - District 2.
Having their say about Tony...
Hi, My name is Asher and I stand with Dr.B for Atlanta School Board. I met Dr. B at Frederick Douglass High School while he was principal.
I have a favorite story to share about Dr. B. Within my school there is a cell phone policy. Well first off I want you to know that I am not your typical student. Dr. B would beg to differ with me on that. Nonetheless I am educated in a special education setting and it is self-contained. It works for me.
Anyway Dr B conducted a cell phone sweep. He came to my classroom to see if I was using my cell or if any of my classmates had their phones out and using them. You know some adults felt it odd that I (we) would have cell phones because of our cognitive levels. But not Dr. B. all students are important to him. I stand with Dr. B because he stands for me.
I also remember the AAA Honor Roll...that, too, was open to all students at Douglass High. Even though I was assigned to a MOID classroom when it came to academics, attendance and attitude, I meet the requirements and my name went up along with my peers. My parents were so proud. Dr. B speaks for all students.
I stand with Dr. B because he stands for equity for student with disabilities.
My Morehouse Brother Tony,
It was a joy to have some brief moments with you. As I sit here in the Atla. airport, waiting for my flight to Lagos, Nigeria, I want you to know that I affirm your decision to run for the Atla. school board. And I hope and pray that you will have an opportunity to do the sacred work that serving on any school board should involve. After all, that is work in the interest of children--the only future we have.

Dr. Tony Burks II is a "rare breed" leader. I was fortunate to have Dr. Burks serve as my principal coach and mentor during my tenure as principal of Kennedy Middle School in the Vine City community.
What I can tell you about Dr. Burks is from firsthand experience. He cares about the success of students and the people who serve them. He knows what works in school governance, what it takes to develop a growth mindset in individuals, and how to maintain a keen focus on the core business of educating students. As a practitioner, he knows education from the inside out. He will be a voice at the table to represent the interest of his constituents and address policies that present barriers to school leaders success and against students achieving success.
Dr. Burks is committed to restoring the strong education legacy of District 2, the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement and home to (Washington High School) the first public secondary school for blacks that opened in 1924, 70 years after public education began in Atlanta.

Former Principal, Kennedy Middle School
As a graduate of public schools, I know how important education is for living a productive life. It takes experienced leaders at the school board level to make public schools the best they can be.
Dr. Burks knows education and has inside knowledge of APS. He's the only career educator running for the Atlanta school board who has worked in APS as a principal, a principal coach, and a principal supervisor.
Let's elect Tony Burks. He will take his experience and work with other board members to create policies that make things better for our children.

My friend and experienced educator Dr. Tony Lamair Burks II is running for the Atlanta District 2 School Board. Just talk to him for five minutes about education, and you can't help but feel his passion and sincerity. Talk to his former students/mentees, and you will see that he leaves a lifelong positive mark on these young people. He is certainly the kind of person you want making decisions that will affect your child's education.
